Lancaster Bombers
The Lancaster Bombers were formed in 1987 by a group of like minded fans who wanted to bring the sport to the area.
The team’s first game was played in the summer of 1988 against the Carlisle Kestrels in front of a crowd of 200 at Castle School in Lancaster. However, due to dwindling numbers, the decision was made to relocate the team to the University in 1990, where it has competed ever since.
Celebrating their 21st birthday this November, the Lancaster Bombers played last season in the Roses Division in the Northern Conference of BUAFL (the Roses name being suggested to the League by a member of the Bombers). During this period, the Bombers have managed to reach the playoffs 5 times, winning the North-East Division of BCAFL twice, during the 1997 and 2000 seasons, finishing with 7-1-0 records each year.
The team’s best overall season came in 2000 when they reached the Conference Final, falling to the eventual Northern Conference Champions - the Leicester Lemmings.
The Bombers are able to increase their numbers on the playing field by using players from the University of Central Lancashire as well as players from the University of Cumbria, mainly the Lancaster campus. In addition to this, the team tries to increase the experience by recruiting North-American students who are on a term or year stay at the University.
The Bombers currently play on an all-weather Astroturf pitch, meaning that for many years, the weather has been unable to stop a Lancaster home game.
