Anglia Ruskin Phantoms

The Anglia Ruskin University Phantoms are a member of the British Universities American Football League [BUAFL].

The team was formed in 2003 and draws together players from Anglia Ruskin University’s sites in Chelmsford and Cambridge, the University of Cambridge and Writtle College.

The team started life competing in the BCAFL as the new team in the South East division. The Phantoms claimed their first victory in the 2005-2006 season, defeating the expansion Royal Holloway Vikings 22-20.

In 2007 the ARU Phantoms joined the BUAFL. With an ever increasing squad the future is looking brighter for the Phantoms.

The origins of Anglia Ruskin University start out in 1858 when John Ruskin Opened a school of art in Sidney street in Cambridge over the years the site expanded onto east road with the opening of the institute of technical education.

In 1989 the Essex institute of higher education merged with Cambridgeshire college of arts and technologies to form Anglia Higher education College. In 1992 The college was finally given University status and was renamed Anglia Polytechnic University. This stayed the name until 2005 when the name was changed to Anglia Ruskin University in honour of the founder John Ruskin.

In 2008 the University celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Notable graduates of the university are Syd Barret and David Gilmour who are in the band Pink Floyd. People with Honorary Degrees from Anglia Ruskin are Graham Gooch (Ex England Cricketer), and Steven Fry.
