Portsmouth Destroyers
The Portsmouth Destroyers have just completed their second season of football, with an overall record of 4-11-1 in 2 seasons.
After going 3-5 last year, this year we will be looking to build on our already ambitious squad and compete for the playoffs this season.
With a high interest of sport at the University of Portsmouth recruiting is always competitive with other sports but our numbers have gone up each year so we are looking forward to a bigger season this year and some enthralling encounters with our South Coast rivals.
The name ‘Destroyers’ is a reference to the City’s proud Naval heritage.
The University of Portsmouth is situated in the historic south coast Naval City of Portsmouth.
The campus is situated in the heart of the vibrant seaside city, where academic buildings, halls of residence, the seafront, nightlife and sports facilities are in close proximity.
The University makes a significant contribution to Britain’s international and national research agenda, particularly in the areas of cosmology, biomedical sciences, Slavonic studies and European studies. It’s teaching scores are excellent (QAA 2004) and the 2007 National Students Survey placed the University in the top ten mainstream English universities for overall satisfaction.
Milestones in 2007/2008 include:
- Re-launch of a prestigious Centre for Molecular Design
- UK’s first dedicated brain tumour research centre established
- New forensic house which provides a multi-disciplinary student environment for studying crime scene detection
- Ranked as one of the top UK universities for its green credentials (2007 UK People and Planet Green League Table)
Notable alumni include Simon Armitage - Poet, David Chidgey, Baron Chidgey of Hamble-le-Rice in the County of Hampshire - Liberal Democrat politician, Shirley Conran - Writer, Ron Davies - Former Labour Politician and Former Secretary of State for Wales, Malcolm Evans (computer programmer), Ben Fogle - Television presenter and Travel writer, Rizwan Khan - Journalist, Rachel Lowe - Game Designer, Entrepreneur & Head of RTL Games, Diana Maddock, Baroness Maddock - Liberal Democrat politician, Andrew Miller - Labour politician, Grayson Perry - Artist winner of the 2003 Turner Prize, Adam Hamilton - Distinguished explorer and adventurer.
The Athletic Union oversees more than 50 clubs ranging from mainstream sports such as football, netball, rugby and hockey to the more extreme such as skydiving, roller hockey and octopush.
The clubs cater for all abilities from the elite through to the more socially motivated. Our location provides an excellent base for water sports, and the Union provide a number of thriving clubs such as sailing, rowing, water-skiing and canoeing.
Our three sports centres house two sports halls, squash courts, two dance/martial arts studios, a synthetic turf pitch, netball courts and grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse. We have a 100-station gym with a CV room, resistance zone and free weights room. The University also works with a number of local clubs to provide access to water sports facilities, swimming, trampolining and riding.
