Brighton Tsunami
The Brighton Tsunami is a joint University American Football team incorporating the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex.
Brighton''''s history is relatively short, joining the then BCAFL league as Full Members in the 2003 / 04 season.
Despite their relative youth the Tsunami made great strides in the early years and in only their fourth season progressed from the regular season into the Play-offs where they lost in the first round to the Essex Blades.
Brighton University
The University was formed as Brighton Polytechnic in 1968 by the merging of Brighton College of Technology and Brighton College of Art.
Before the merger external University of London degrees were offered. As a polytechnic, degrees were granted under the auspices of the Council for National Academic Awards, an umbrella organisation responsible for monitoring the quality of degrees at most polytechnics during the 1960s and 70s.
It was given University status in 1992.
Famous alumni inlcude Alison Lapper – Artist/sculptor, Jo Whiley – TV/Radio presenter, Abu Hamza – Cleric.
Sussex University
The University of Sussex was the first of the new wave of British universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in August 1961, and came to be identified not only with postwar social change, but a groundbreaking interdisciplinary approach, and later social engagement.
The University is ranked within the top 30 in the UK, with The Guardian University Rankings of 2005 placing Sussex 16th, whilst the 2007 "Good University Guide" places Sussex in 27th position and the latest 2008 ranking sees Sussex move up to 24th.
According to the 2008 Guardian University Rankings, Sussex has the number one ranked chemistry department among British universities, with its Professor Geoff Cloke recently being elected a Fellow of The Royal Society.
