Swansea Titans

The Swansea Titans, although a new team, have been a pipe dream of the University''''s students for many years.

When students at the University became aware of a thriving University league, a large number of students met, agreeing that if so many of the student body were interested in the sport, it should become part of Swansea''''s vast sports prospectus.

After an official committee was established, the first training sessions began, with Mike Senter, a postgraduate student for Boston, Massachusetts, running the sessions. He was joined by a Glamorgan University student, Joe Stout, who had helped form and played for the Buckinghamshire Buccaneers, before moving back to Wales. Later in the year, Steve "Fluff" James, a former O and D-Lineman for Rockingham Rebels, South Wales Warriors and College All Stars, was installed as coach for the line. Steve was installed as Head Coach in September 2008 due to founding Head Coach Mike Senter having to return to the USA.

The team has grown hugely in numbers, and and after a successful recruitment period during Freshers are looking forward to their year as Associate Members of the BUAFL for the 2008/09 season.

FOUNDED IN 1920, SWANSEA WAS THE FOURTH COLLEGE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WALES.

SWANSEA GAINED INDEPENDENCE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WALES IN SEPTEMBER 2007, AND NOW A STANDALONE UNIVERSITY, IT IS RESEARCH LED, AND A LEADER IN SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY.

THE UNIVERSITY IS LOCATED IN THE GROUNDS OF SINGLETON PARK, AND OVERLOOKS SWANSEA BAY, PART OF THE NATURAL BEAUTY SPOT, THE GOWER PENINSULA.

RECENT SURVEYS AND LEAGUE TABLES HAVE PLACED SWANSEA CONSISTENTLY IN THE TOP 20 UNIVERSITIES IN THE UK, FOR TEACHING QUALITY AND STUDENT SATISFACTION. IN 2005, SWANSEA WON THE TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION SUPPLEMENT AWARD FOR THE BEST STUDENT EXPERIENCE, AND HAS CONSISTENTLY PLACED WELL IN THIS, AND SIMILAR CATEGORIES IN OTHER SURVEYS. SWANSEA HAS A RICH HISTORY, AND NOTABLE ALUMNI INCLUDE PRESIDENT OF STARBUCKS COFFEE INTERNATIONAL, MARTIN COLES, HALF A DOZEN MPs, INCLUDING CURRENT DEPUTY SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS, SYLVIA HEAL, AS WELL AS WALES’ FIRST BILLIONAIRRE, SIR TERRY MATTHEWS.

SWANSEA ALSO HAS A RICH CULTURAL BACKGROUND, WITH MANIC STREET PREACHERS GUITARIST NICKY WIRE, AND FORMER GUITARIST RICHEY EDWARDS BOTH ATTENDING. CURRENT WELSH RUGBY INTERNATIONALS DWAYNE PEEL AND ALUN WYN JONES ATTENDED, AND HAD SUCCESSFUL SPORTS CAREERS AT SWANSEA, AS DID WELSH RUGBY GREAT ROBERT HOWLEY.

SWANSEA HAS ITS OWN RADIO STATION, “XTREME RADIO”, WHICH CELEBRATES IT’S 40TH BIRTHDAY IN 2008. ALSO SWANSEA HAS OVER 4500 ARTEFACTS ON SHOW IN ITS MUSEUM OF EGYPTIAN ANTIQUITIES, WHICH IS OPEN TO STUDENTS AND THE PUBLIC
